Church Outreach Pgms

Living in America

Living in America is a Hitchcock outreach program that provides English conversation classes at the church for international adults on Thursday mornings during the school year. Singing, cooking, trips, learning about American holidays and customs, and visiting American homes are included in the program. Playcare is available to participants. The Mission Committee helps fund the program, and the Presbyterian Women donate foreign language Bibles to newcomers.

Midnight Run

For over 24 years, Midnight Run as a volunteer organization has been dedicated to finding common ground between the housed and the homeless. At 7:00 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month (except for February, July, October & November when we meet at 6:00 AM to do the Breakfast Runs) volunteers gather in the Lower Children’s House to prepare for the Run. Vans are loaded up and driven into Manhattan for the distribution of food, clothing, blankets and personal care items as we fellowship to build common ground. There are many ways to participate in Midnight Run. For more information contact: 1. Church Office at 914-723-3311 or 2. Rudyard Whyte at lifter1@aol.com.

Soup Kitchen - supported by Presbyterian Women

Soup Kitchen is a "hands on" outreach program which takes place the second Tuesday of every month at 9:00 a.m. Our cooks meet in the kitchen of the Lower Children's House to prepare a Tex-Mex main course and tossed salad to serve people at Grace Episcopal Church in White Plains. The Soup Kitchen is a great way to work at a grass roots level in the community, but requires less than two hours a month. Call the Church Office at 723-3311 to volunteer, or just show up - help is always needed.

The Thrift Shop - operated by Presbyterian Women

The White Plains Thrift Shop has operated since 1918 by Hitchcock women, in association with Scarsdale Woman's Club and Woman's Club of White Plains. Located in the Barker Avenue rooms of the White Plains Presbyterian Church, 39 North Broadway, the Thrift Shop is open every Tuesday (9:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.) and the 1st Saturday of every month (9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.) from September through July. Every 3rd Tuesday, Hitchcock Church is responsible for staffing the shop and needs one volunteer on the 1st Saturday of the month.

The Hitchcock Church Thrift Shop runs on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Lower Children's House of the Hitchcock Presbyterian Church, volunteers sort, price and prepare merchandise for sale at the White Plains Thrift Shop.

The Thrift Shop operation is a fourfold blessing for Hitchcock: it is an outlet for clothing and household effects that are serviceable, offers customers a wide variety of affordable merchandise, raises thousands of dollars each year for PW's benevolent giving, and presents opportunities for vital volunteer service. Men's clothing is also provided for Midnight Run when available.

This operation requires more than 2,000 hours of volunteer service each year. Each Monday in the Lower Children's House at Hitchcock, volunteers sort, price and prepare merchandise for sale. Hitchcock women and men volunteer in the shop in White Plains. Workers are needed on a regular or occasional basis. Rene Thiel and Alma Whyte are the Co-Chairs of the Thrift Committee for Hitchcock. For more information contact the Church Office at 723-3311.

"Equal Exchange" Coffee

Every time you drink a cup of coffee at coffee hour on Sunday mornings, you are supporting a cooperative of Third World coffee growers. We serve only "fairly traded" coffee at our coffee hours, meaning that most of the price that we pay for the coffee goes, not to "middle men," but directly to the growers.

Boy Scouts

Scarsdale Boy Scout Troop 4 was re-instated and chartered to Hitchcock Presbyterian Church in the spring of 2006 Troop 4 has a rich history in the Greenacres area of Scarsdale and had served the area from the 1930’s until it became defunct in the late 1970s. The newly re-instated troop currently has 42 registered boys, with the only difference being that the troop is no longer exclusive to Greenacres. The current troop has boys from Hartsdale, Arsdley, Heathcote, Quaker Ridge, Edgewood, Fox Meadow, and of course Greenacres. We meet at Hitchcock in the Lower Children's House every Monday at 7:00 p.m. We invite any boys who has completed the fifth grade, or who are 11 through 17 years old and who wishes to attend, to join our ranks! For more information about who we are and what we do you can log onto our web site at www.troopfour.org. If you would like to speak to someone you can call our Troop's Committee Chairperson, Tod Cooperman at tod.cooperman@consumerlab.com.

Cub Scouts

Scarsdale Cub Scout Pack 440 is affiliated with Hitchcock Presbyterian Church. The Pack consists of about four dozen boys from grades K through 5, led by parent volunteers. The boys come from all five neighborhoods of Scarsdale, as well as adjacent towns. The Pack organizes numerous camping, hiking and rafting trips, community service projects, a Halloween party, the flag ceremony for local civic events, overnight trips to museums and battleships, as well as the annual Pinewood Derby. We invite any young boy who wishes to explore the outdoors, make new friends and learn to become a great citizen of our community to join our Pack. For more information, please visit:
