Presbyterian Women

Purpose: Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ; we commit ourselves to:

  • Nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study;
  • Support the mission of the Church worldwide; Click Here to read more about our Benevolence: Policy on Giving
  • Work for justice and peace; and
  • Build an inclusive, caring community of women that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (USA) and witnesses to the promise of God's kingdom.
  • Presbyterian Women provides opportunities for fellowship, Bible study, and service for all women of Hitchcock Church. Membership is open to all persons who support the purpose as stated above.

PW Fellowship

All women of the church are invited to attend dinners, field trips and trips as scheduled. Event details also appear in Hitchcock Happenings (the church's weekly news publication.)

Bible Study for Faith Building

Tuesday mornings: 9:30 a.m. in the Hancock Room Classes begin September 25 and meet every 1st, 4th and 5th Tuesday, except December; ends June 4.

Study: Horizon’s "Dispatches to God’s Household: The General Epistle's” covering six short books of the New Testament (1-2 Peter, 1-3 John and Jude). We will learn more about what it means to live in a community and to belong to the household of God.

Women and men are invited to explore and nurture your faith through study of the Bible and other topics that nurture the soul. It is not necessary to have knowledge of the Bible.

Soup Kitchen

Soup Kitchen is a "hands on" outreach program which takes place the third Tuesday of every month at 9:00 a.m. Our cooks meet in the kitchen of the Lower Children's House to prepare a Tex-Mex main course and tossed salad to serve people at Grace Episcopal Church and Open Arms in White Plains. The Soup Kitchen is a great way to work at a grass roots level in the community but requires less than two hours a month.

The Thrift Shop

Thrift Shop in White Plains has operated since 1918 by Hitchcock women, in association with Scarsdale Woman's Club and Woman's Club of White Plains. Located in the Barker Avenue rooms of the White Plains Presbyterian Church, 39 North Broadway, the Thrift Shop is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from September through July.

The Thrift Shop at Hitchcock is a four-fold blessing: It is an outlet for clothing and household effects that are serviceable, offers customers a wide variety of affordable merchandise, and raises thousands of dollars each year for PW's benevolent giving. It also presents opportunities for vital volunteer service. This operation requires more than 2,000 hours of volunteer services each year. Men's clothing is also provided for Midnight Run when available.

Monday mornings in the Lower Children's House from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., volunteers sort, price, and prepare merchandise for sale. Contact Alma Whyte. Rene Thiel and Lee Maiden, Co Chairs of the PW Thrift Committee, if you want to learn more about this valuable work.

Financial Support

The generous giving of our church members enables us to actively pursue mission work and educational programs in the local community, nationally and overseas. PW is committed to providing financial support to worthy organizations as diverse as Tasaru Safehouse for Maasai girls, Rural & Migrant Ministry, Andrus Children Center (Yonkers), and Missio International for Deborah House/Romania for abused girls. We are able to donate 90% of all monies we raise from donations and sales received from Thrift; the balance goes to Thrift operations and PW program activities to domestic and international churchs. Your pledges to PW are separate from the regular stewardship commitment made to the church each year. When you give to PW you are also contributing to the important mission work of Hitchcock.
