The congregation of Hitchcock Presbyterian Church is diverse, friendly, accepting, vital and enthusiastic. Understanding our mission, we strive for personal growth and renewal through worship, challenging preaching, teaching, prayer and serving our community and the wider world. Sunday morning worship is central to the life of the church. Through the church's many programs and activities, the people of Hitchcock seek to nurture their faith and learn what it is God is calling them to do with the many gifts they have been given.
PRESBYTERIAN 101
Hitchcock Presbyterian Church is a member of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A).
Presbyterians trace their history to the 16th century and the Protestant Reformation. Our heritage, and much of what we believe, began with the French lawyer John Calvin (1509-1564), whose writings crystallized much of the Reformed thinking that came before him.
Calvin did much of his writing from Geneva, Switzerland. From there, the Reformed movement spread to other parts of Europe and the British Isles. Many of the early Presbyterians in America came from England, Scotland and Ireland. The first American Presbytery was organized at Philadelphia in 1706. The first General Assembly was held in the same city in 1789. The first Assembly was convened by the Rev. John Witherspoon, the only minister to sign the Declaration of Independence.
AFFILIATION
Hitchcock Presbyterian Church belongs to the Presbytery of Hudson River, which is made up of more than 85 churches in seven counties in the lower Hudson River Valley, and is part of Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) via the Synod of the Northeast.
Our church contributes to the work of the Presbytery with both financial support and the time and talent of Elders who sit on Presbytery committees or members who work in different areas of the Presbytery.
Hitchcock is proudly a member of More Light Presbyterians, a network of churches “working toward the full participation of LGBTQIA+ people in the life, ministry and witness of the Presbyterian Church (USA) – and in society.”
